EXCLUSIVE: American Anthony Jenette – whose social media handle is AJ Slambino – is a massive fan of Brit food, now he’s watched The Inbetweeners and its spinoff movie to share his thoughts
A yank who’s a big deal on TikTok has watched The Inbetweeners for first time and offered up his take on comedy gold from our side of the pond.
The coming-of-age teen sitcom could not have been more British. It followed the trials and tribulations of suburban teenager William McKenzie and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright, at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. It’s a hilarious exploration of school life, indifferent teachers, friendship, male bonding, lad culture and adolescent sexuality.
The show has since been hailed as a classic and is considered one of the most successful British sitcoms of the 21st century.
But how well does it translate to an American audience? Are there relatable themes? Does the banter between the English guys make the cultural leap?
The Daily Star has consulted the expertise of self-confessed British food lover, Anthony Jenette – whose social handle is AJ Slambino – to see whether his admiration of blighty things goes beyond the plate.
AJ revealed: “The humour is hilarious. This would not be allowed on American TV, not even on Netflix.
“Some of the stuff they are saying is so crossing the line, America would not allow this on TV.”
He added that he: “Totally understood the jokes and humour.” But admits that he stopped after five episodes: “Because it did feel like it got a bit boring and repetitive.”
Reflecting on what he saw, AJ said: “I liked the comedy their characters had. Jay and Neil were my favourite. They were the funniest to me. Jay boasting about his exploits that we all know never happened. Neil is so dumb it was funny.
“However, my least favourite was Will. He was too dry for me. I know that’s the character he was portraying, but I didn’t like it.”
And how does AJ believe the comedy would be received by viewers across the Atlantic?
“I truly don’t think Americans would like it because they wouldn’t get the jokes or humour,” he said.
“I’d watch more for sure.”
To cover all bases, AJ said he took in the movie of the series, following numerous recommendations from his friends and followers, and it’s safe to say he was a fan.
“The movie had me in tears,” he said.
“I was laughing so hard. I don’t think I laughed that hard at a movie in a very long time.”
