Ant and Dec let slip secret on how they host lockdown Saturday Night Takeaway

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have opened up about trying to host Saturday Night Takeaway from their living rooms, revealing it hasn’t been as easy as it looks.

The TV duo had hoped to try and limp on and host the show from the ITV studios in central London, though as Covid-19 spread up and down the UK they were forced to take drastic action.

After hosting one show from the studio without a live audience the boys decided to call it a day and change tactic.

Speaking on Dermot O’Leary’s Radio 2 breakfast show, Dec said: “It is very different hosting from home.

“It’s that thing that we are used to being next to each other. Now he is on the line and out of shot.”

Explaining how he is hosting the show from his phone, Dec continued: “There are all these technical people on the end of a video conference line and they are talking you through it but really you’re right – it is all down on you.

“It is me with a mobile phone – you would think it would be more technical than that but it’s not. It is me with a mobile in my living room.

“We are praying the the technology will hold up and the WiFi will hold up. Get off the WiFi everyone!”

Despite the stripped back nature of the new temporary format, Dec went on to says he has found it much harder to host the show from home than in an ITV studio.

The new dad added: “You want it to feel free and easy but it’s very nerve-wracking.

“It is lovely to see inside everyone houses though.

“You just know this is the best version of them you want them to see – like a profile picture.

“It got to the point where we couldn’t carry on bringing the number of crew in the studio we were and Ant and I had to stand two meters apart..

“We did pre record the last two episodes but then we thought it would be great to do it from home and that is what we have done.

Such a lot of our show relies on the audience but we just wanted to bring the best show we could in the circumstances.

Meanwhile, Ant added: “It looks dead easy in that you go backhand forth but it is not.

“It has been great. We were given the chance to still broadcast and still be on air. It is a privilege.”
