Mary Berry has recommended people buy hot cross buns from a supermarket instead of making their own – despite releasing a book with a recipe for them.
In a chat on Radio 4’s The Food Programme, she said: “The comfort of a cake, there’s nothing nicer than a Victoria sandwich.
“Maybe you even want to tackle something like hot cross buns.

“Mind you, I have to confess that the best quality ones are in the supermarkets, they have the better quality.
“I have never really thought mine were better. They are difficult to get light and right.”
Fans were shocked by her admission.
One tweeted: “Exactly half way through making Mary Berry hot cross bun recipe, only to hear her say on @BBCFoodProg that the supermarket ones are better than hers!”

This comes after the Former Great British Bake Off queen shamed Brits for being a nation that “orders in and eats out”.
The 84-year-old blasted: “I have never had a takeaway.
“I can muster up things very quickly and there are many things that you can buy to help you if you are busy and which don’t cost that much extra, like grated cheese.”
