Kate Garraway urges fans to 'stay positive' as husband Derek fights for his life

Kate Garraway has returned to social media for the first time in a month, reaching out to fans to thank them for their support.

The 52-year-old Good Morning Britain star replied to certain messages over Twitter, urging her followers to “stay positive”.

Her husband, Derek Draper, 52, has been fighting for his life in intensive care, after contracting coronavirus last month.

Kate’s co-host, Ben Shephard, has described Derek’s condition as “critical,” saying: “She’s been able to speak with Derek in the evenings in a coma.”

Earlier this week, one fan messaged Kate, saying: “@kategarraway theres a story on bbc news just now about a 30+ student nurse who has been in ICU for ages, and just recovered and got home…. be positive….. keep trying to get verbal messages to him, ….. the subconscious can sometimes hear.”

Grateful for the show of support, Kate wrote: “Thank you so much xxx.”

Another fan wrote: “My mum (who’s 80 next week and not a Twitter user!) has asked if I could let you know she lights a candle every day for Derek and for all those suffering from this horrendous virus. We send you and your family lots of love. X.”

Reaching out to the fan, Kate replied: “That’s so wonderful – thank you so much and sending love x #staypositive.”

The posts come after Kate shared a heartbreaking update about Derek’s condition, describing the experience as “agonising”.

She said: “This is such a tough time for us all as we struggle to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We must all stand together and support each other through these excruciatingly difficult times.”

The mum-of-two went on: “As you may know my husband Derek is critically ill with COVID-19 in intensive care and it remains an agonising time for us as a family.

“But I know I am not alone, so many others are worried for their loved ones or having to cope with the grief of losing them and there are challenges for everyone in this pandemic.

“Let’s stand together and do share your experiences too.”

Kate, and her two children Darcey, 14, and William, 11, have been unable to visit Derek in hospital due to the coronavirus regulations in place.

The star also spoke out on a post on her Club Garraway Wellbeing Club blog this week to admit she was battling stress and anxiety as she reached out to those also supporting loved ones through coronavirus battles.
