Kate Garraway given boost by fan amid husband's heartbreaking coronavirus battle

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has been given a welcomed boost from a fan whose husband was also in ICU for weeks battling coronavirus like her spouse Derek Draper.

Former lobbyist Derek, 52, has been battling Covid-19 in hospital since March and Kate has been keeping fans up to date on his condition via social media.

After taking part in the weekly clap for carer moment on Thursday, Kate, 53, received message of hope from one of her followers.

The women wrote: “Keep the faith Kate. We have my husband back after a seven week fight in ITU miracles do happen.”

The grateful ITV star replied to the fan: “So happy to hear that – much love.”

Kate previously shared a video from her street as her neighbours made their support for frontline workers known.

The former I’m A Celeb contestant penned: “Have taken so much comfort and inspiration from the spirit of the country beautifully personified by Captain Tom these past few weeks and with VE Day tomorrow it’s a reminder of the strength and resilience that we all have within us if we pull together and keep going.

“Derek is still with us, fighting so hard to beat this virus & everyday I am awestruck by how hard every member of the NHS team is fighting to turn things around and bring him (and so many others) home to their loved ones.

“You are amazing – thank you thank you. Sending love to you all in these terrible times.”

The daytime broadcaster has been calling husband Derek in intensive care every evening but she’s admitted that she has no idea” if he’s been responding.

Kate’s GMB co-star and close friend Ben Shephard recently gave viewers an insight into her heartache.

During a video-link interview with a school teacher who has beaten the deadly disease and the NHS nurses that saved her life, Ben said of Kate: “Staff are taking a phone in the evenings and she can talk to her husband.

“She has no idea if he is responding, but she hopes that he is. It’s a source of comfort.”

Kate has received thousands of heartwarming messages from fans, each taking to her comments section on her social media page to detail their stories of survival.

One follower wrote: “You are amazing Kate, you are one of the strongest women ever! I saw on the news there was an 85-year-old man who had been in intensive care for 49 days and he went home this week!” with Kate replying with pink hearts.

Kate married Derek Draper in 2005 and the couple have two children Darcey, 14 and Billy, 10.
