Piers Morgan gets personal as he describes loved-ones who died from coronavirus

Piers Morgan has discussed how coronavirus has affected him on a personal level in an emotional interview.

The 55-year-old spoke about the people he knew who had tragically lost their lives to the dreaded virus.

Piers also revealed that his Good Morning Britain co-star Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper is still fighting for his life in the ICU ward after contracting Covid-19.

Speaking in an interview on talkRADIO, the media personality said: “I have a cousin whose father died of coronavirus.

“Had another friend of mine – a TV producer who I’ve worked on foreign assignments – whose mum died in a care home last week.”

The opinionated ITV presenter then went on to tell host Kevin O’Sullivan that, as he spoke, Derek was still battling the devastating condition.

He continued: “I’ve had Kate Garraway, who’s the Good Morning Britain co-presenter of mine – her husband Derek Draper is fighting for his life as we speak and has been for many weeks in an ICU unit.

“So I’ve been personally affected by this, by the sheer volume of friends of mine and family who have been directly impacted in the most horrific manner.

“So yeah, I do feel a personal attachment to this story. But I think most people, if they have a conscience, should.”

Kate gave an emotional update on her critically-ill husband on Thursday as the UK took to their doorways for the weekly clap for the NHS.

She revealed that during the 8pm tribute to the NHS, she was able to FaceTime Derek for the first time since he entered the hospital.

Kate said in a moving post on Instagram: “We still clapped & cheered as much as ever but I couldn’t film on my phone as had Derek on FaceTime throughout! – of course, we can’t KNOW but I believe he can hear us & thought at least the incredible @nhs team’s looking after him would hear a fraction of our gratitude.”

Derek has remained in a critical condition in the ICU for several weeks after contracting the virus.

Last week, Kate said he is “still with us, fighting so hard”.

The ITV host has taken a step back from hosting GMB as she continues to isolate at home with her two children.
