Coronation Street's Julia Goulding talks Shona's transformation as she returns

Coronation Street star Julia Goulding’s on-screen return is imminent, with the new mum coming back as her fan-favourite character Shona Ramsey.

The character left the show earlier this year after suffering a brain injury after she was shot over Christmas, losing her memory and forgetting her current life.

But she’s set to come back, still not remembering husband David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) or any of her life on the famous cobbles.

With that in mind, the actress confirmed to Daily Star Online that Shona will be reverting back to the look viewers first saw of her when she joined the soap back in December 2016.

Julia told us: “It’s interesting because obviously she’s still Shona underneath it all, the essence of her is still there, as is her fashion sense.

“What we did, I spoke to Liz our head of makeup, and costume as well, and we discussed taking her back to the Shona that we first met three-and-a-half years ago.

“So the Doc Martens are still very much a staple, she’s gone slightly more grungy, we’ve gone a bit heavier with her eye makeup, which is the way I looked when I actually started playing Shona.

She went on: “We’ve sort of reverted back to that needing to be quick on your feet. She’s got her Docs on, she’s not an Ugg Boot wearer, she’s sturdier than that.

“So that’s the way we went with the way she looks, to let the audience know which Shona we’re receiving at the moment.”

Of course, as well as the physical transformation, there is a change in Shona’s personality too.

Julia said: “With the nature of her brain injury, it has changed her personality somewhat so she is slightly more volatile than she was before.

“It will potentially come across as she’s quite cold and mean to David, it isn’t that she is being mean, it’s that’s where she goes to. She goes from one to 100 in seconds now, so the bouncy Shona that we used to know may not be as bouncy.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV
