EastEnders execs are said to be getting ready to drop upcoming storylines once the show returns following a brief hiatus.
Should bosses go ahead and throw current storylines in the bin, it will create a second series of the iconic soap.
Producers are hoping that the drastic decision will allow EastEnders to come back, bigger than ever once they return to the set later this month.
Cast and crew on the Albert Square-based show shut up shop in March once the UK went into lockdown following the coronavirus outbreak.
An insider told The Sun: “Everyone understands that this is an unprecedented moment in the soap’s history having to take this break, so they want to make a big event out of the comeback.
“They’re planning big storylines and a big marketing push — but that may mean they just start new stuff from scratch rather than continuing where they’re already at so they can be dramatic as possible.
“It would essentially mean the first series of EastEnders lasted 35 years — and the second starts in two months.”
EastEnders is set to stop transmitting come June 16th, despite airing two episodes per week in order to try and stay on the air as no episodes have been filmed since March.
Instead, Monday nights will see EastEnders: Secrets From The Square air from June 22nd, while old episodes will be shown on Tuesday evenings.
Secrets From The Square will see much-loved cast members give behind the scenes tours of the set as well as exclusively revealing information regarding future episodes.
Kate Phillips, Controller of BBC Entertainment went on to say: “EastEnders has been at the heart of BBC One since its inception 35 years ago.
“While going off-air was never in their plan, we and the EastEnders team knew straight away that this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the show, look back on cherished memories of all those momentous episodes whilst taking a look around Albert Square and they may just give us some teasers as to what’’s to come when they return.”
EastEnders airs Monday and Tuesday nights on BBC One at 7.30pm, with the special episodes airing from Monday, June 22nd.
