Kate Garraway says her kids have made 'welcome home' banners for dad Derek

Kate Garraway ‘s two children have been making banners to welcome home their dad Derek Draper.

Her daughter Darcey, 14, and son William, 11, have been extremely worried about their mum, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, after her husband of 15 years went into intensive care having contracted coronavirus.

Speaking to The Sun, the broadcaster said she tried to remain positive about things to avoid upsetting her children, but admitted they understand how dangerous the condition can be when it comes to life and death.

She said: “They’ve always known because they are very aware people can die from Covid, that the risk is there.”

Revealing the painful moment Darcey expressed her worry for her tearful mum, she said: “After the MRI scan I had been really crying and Darcey could tell.

“She said: ‘I’m worried about you, Mum, because you’re so sad’ and I said: ‘I’m sorry but it’s just such a sad situation,'” Kate told the newspaper.

She added: “She asked what the doctors said and I told her they’d said he wasn’t going to get better quickly.

“She and Billy had made ‘welcome home’ banners and when he asked when Dad might be home, Darcey said it could be a year.”

Even though she is doing everything she can to support them, the TV star made it clear that she has never lied to her children about what is going on.

She said: “They’ve never asked me directly, ‘Is Dad going to die?’ whenever I come off the phone.”

“They say, ‘How is Dad today?’ and I always try to say something positive like, ‘He’s really stable today’ or ‘His kidneys seem to be doing better’ or ‘He’s very sick but he’s fighting hard and the doctors are taking good care of him’.”

Kate’s revelations came on the same day she appeared on GMB to share information about Derek’s current condition during a tearful interview with her co-stars.

Speaking about her husband, the presenter said that she was “grateful that he’s still here”.

She also confirmed he is now free of the virus but still in a critical condition, saying: “The fight with the virus has been won, but it’s wreaked extraordinary damage to his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that.”

She added: “It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.”
