Meet Love Island Australia narrator Eoghan McDermott

Love Island UK will sadly not be returning to ITV2 for another series of summer love, so in order to fill your reality TV dating hole, the TV network have decided to re-air Love Island Australia as a fitting replacement.

While the Aussie version follows the same format (think make ups, break ups, tense recoupling and hot and heavy antics), there is one noticeable difference.

While the UK version blessed viewers with the dulcet Scottish tones of narrator Iain Stirling, Irish TV and radio presenter Eoghan McDermott landed the narrator role for the very first Aussie edition of the hit show.

Quite the gig for the relatively unknown star, Eoghan quickly built up a loyal fanbase thanks to his cutting one-liners, comedic timing, and for bringing about some laughter during the uneasy moments of the show.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Where do I recognise Eoghan McDermott from?

It’s not just Love Island Australia that Eoghan is known for as he cut his teeth in the entertainment industry long before gracing the reality show with his Dublin twang.

The Irish native got his start in the hosting business when he entered into MTV’s presenting competition, Pick Me MTV, however he failed to win, and was beaten by Laura Whitmore, who coincidentally, dates Iain Stirling, and now presents the UK’s Love Island. Small world, eh?

A year later he landed a role hosting bi-lingual music show Spin, and then moved into the world of radio, presenting XFM’s drive time programme in 2011.

His big small-screen break came when he became the main presenter on The Voice Ireland in 2012.

Most recently, he appeared on RTÉ 2fm’s breakfast show alongside Doireann Garrihy, however, due to Love Island filming commitments, he left the programme months later.

Is Eoghan single?

The Irish presenter is dating girlfriend Aoife Melia with the pair initially meeting at university

Eoghan won’t be appearing as a Love Island contestant anytime soon having been with girlfriend Aoife Melia since their university days.

The pair struck up a romance while studying, but broke up because of long-distance, however reconnected several years later, and are smitten once more.

While the duo are both keen dancers, Aoife is a trained doctor and works in Dublin, having moved from her native Glasgow.

How did he go down with Australian audiences?

It seems Eoghan’s Irish charm and quick wit went down well with viewers Down Under.

Viewers of the show soon took to Twitter following the final of the first season, and he was invited back to narrate the second series.

One wrote: “I can’t stand any of them any more just give the money to the voice over guy.”

And another penned: “Are you allowed to pick the narrator in the re-coupling?”

“These jokes by the narrator make the show!” a third chipped in.

Anything else?

He’s an avid social media user – and you can keep up to date with all things Love Island by following him on Instagram @eoghanmcdermott and Twitter @eoghanmcdermo.
