Kristen Stewart cast as Princess Diana in new biopic – leaving fans furious

Twitter has been sent into a frenzy following news that Twilight actress Kristen Stewart has been cast as Princess Diana in a new Hollywood flick.

The 30-year-old has signed on to play the British icon in the movie Spencer, which is said to be set around a weekend in the 1990s when Diana realised her marriage to Prince Charles was over.

But Twitter users have been left scratching their heads, suggesting that Kristen is a rather odd choice to play the People’s Princess.

One unhappy film fan said: “Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana is so wrong on so many levels.”

Another wrote: “Plenty of British actresses who would have been better for this role, Princess Diana was classy, Kristen is not. They don’t even look alike.”

A third tweeted: “Couldn’t you have found a British actress?”

Someone else joked: “And now Kristen Stewart is playing Princess Diana? Man this year is cursed.”

While a fifth added: “Kristen Stewart to play Princess Diana? Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t get much worse.”

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín has defended his decision to cast Kristen as Diana though.

He told Deadline: “Kristen is one of the greatest actors around today.

“Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need.

“The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see.

“I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time.”

The script is written by Steven Knight, the English screenwriter who has worked on Peaky Blinders.

It will not look at Diana’s tragic death, instead focusing on her marriage to Charles and her love for her children Prince William and Prince Harry.

Production on the film is expected to start in early 2021.
