Fern Britton has revealed that she and ex-husband Phil Vickery “fell apart” during the later stages of their marriage.
Six months since the television power couple dropped the bombshell that they were to divorce, Fern has opened up on their crumbling relationship.
After meeting in 1999, the pair had been married for 20 years before they announced their separation in January.
Fern has recently written another novel, Daughters of Cornwall, based on her own family history, but says the publication release was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Speaking to Good Morning Britain’sLorraine Kelly about the past few months, Fern, 62, said: “My mum died and my father died and unfortunately, Phil and I fell apart.”

Despite separating, Phil and Fern remain on good terms adding: “Fortunately it’s all smooth.
“We just came to the end of the road, you know, which is sad.”
Earlier this month, she revealed that she “missed” her friendship with her ex-husband, adding that they had a “wonderful time”.

Announcing their separation, Fern tweeted: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways.
“We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children. “We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time. Thank you for your continued kindness and support.”
Fern, who left This Morning 11 years ago, has admitted she has “no regrets” following her decision to walk away after ten years on the ITV magazine show.
“I loved that show, if I hadn’t gone then I would probably still be there,” she said.
She added: “You see the same things coming through and think how can we give it a new… but of course new and young production teams come through.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
