Johnny Depp gave daughter cannabis at 13 claiming it was 'responsible parenting'

Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard appeared at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today for the start of his libel case.

During the trial, the 57-year-old was asked about his past drug use as well as some violent incidents.

He said that he was introduced to drugs when he was a child and gave his daughter Lily-Rose cannabis when she was 13.

The Hollywood actor said that he gave his daughter the drug as he wanted her to have a safe experience with it.

The Fantastic Beasts star claimed he believed that it was “responsible parenting” allowing Lily-Rose to try the drug.

He said that he did not want her having a bad experience with it when he was not around.

Earlier in the trial, the Disney star said that he’d first taken drugs at 11 when he took one of his mother’s nerve pills.

He claimed that he had taken “every kind of drug there was” by the time he turned 14.

Depp told the court that they were an escape from “a lot of upheaval” and “pain” from his childhood.

He admitted to using cocaine, ecstasy, LSD “when I was younger”, mushrooms and cannabis.

But he denied ever taking ketamine.

Depp claimed that many of the figures he admired had taken drugs, including American writer Hunter S Thompson.

He said he had taken drugs twice with musician Marilyn Manson “many years ago”.

And he spoke of taking drugs with British actor Paul Bettany when the barrister used the phrase “drug buddies”.

Depp said: “Paul Bettany is an actor that I’ve worked with several times, he is a friend and we have… yes, we have dabbled in drugs together.”

He listed cocaine, alcohol, Xanax and Adderall as some of the drugs they had taken.

The libel case concerns an April 2018 column in The Sun, which spoke of allegations of violence against Heard by Depp.

Depp denies ever having been violent towards his ex-wife.

He will continue giving evidence tomorrow (Wednesday).
