Maya Jama devastated as she announces beloved grandfather has died

Maya Jama has revealed she is “devastated” as she announced the death of her beloved grandfather.

The television presenter, 25, shared the sad news on her Instagram stories, posting a heartfelt tribute to her grandad.

She shared the moving photographs with her 1.6m followers, saying that heaven has “gained another angel”.

The first picture the former BBC Radio One DJ posted was a shot of the sky with the words “RIP Grandad” written across it.

Maya’s second picture saw her and her brother Omar alongside their grandfather, beaming at the camera.

Her third story post was a throwback snap of her grandparents with her father, alongside her uncle and aunt.

She captioned the sweet family photograph: “Real g’s immigrated from Somalia and built a life for themselves, started working, started a family, bought a house.

“Pretty sure they were one of the first Somali families in Bristol.”

Maya also remarked on her similarity to her grandmother on the family photograph, writing: “Proper look like my Nan” with a heart emoji.

Maya also posted her grandfather’s passport photo as a young man, adding “Gained another angel” to the picture with a red heart emoji.

Maya and Omar were raised by their mum Sadie, who is of Swedish descent, in Bristol.

Stormzy’s ex moved to London when she was 16 to pursue her career in broadcasting. She set up a YouTube channel and worked as a presenter for JumpOff.TV.

Her work continued in the media as she hosted MTV Base show, The Wrap Up, MTV Essentials and MTV News.

She then was propelled to stardom after hosting her own show on BBC Radio 1 on Friday and Saturday from 10am-1pm.

Maya has been open about her relationship with her father.

She cut ties with when she was just 12 after his array of incarcerations.

Her BBC documentary, When Dad Kills: Murdered in the Family, was released in 2017, with the show exploring how children are affected by having a parent in jail.
