Legendary DJ Jose Padilla says he has cancer and can't afford to pay rent

DJ Jose Padilla has revealed he has colon cancer and can’t afford to pay his rent.

After the coronavirus pandemic stopped him from touring, the Spanish DJ has struggled to make ends meet, and set-up a GoFundMe page in order to raise £20,000 for an impending operation.

In a statement on GoFundMe, he wrote: “Hola amigos, unfortunately, I have some bad news. Some days ago I was taken to hospital and I have been diagnosed with colon cancer and now I am waiting for an operation.

“My situation is very bad, I am completely broken after 5 months with no income whatsoever and no way to pay my rent, so humbly I ask if you can help me with your donations. Thank you.”

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Padilla moved to Ibiza in 1975, taking up the DJ residency at Café del Mar in 1991.

After setting up his fundraising initiative, he was inundated with donations from fans as well as figureheads from the UK music scene.

British DJ and music producer Peter Gooding donated £100 and wrote: “Hi Jose, thanks for the music and look after yourself.”

And Danny Rampling, house music DJ and widely credited as one of the original founders of the UK’s rave/club scene, penned: “Thinking of you Jose. Sending love, respect, healing and recovery.”

In 1994, Jose compiled the first Cafe del Mar album for the React label – and the series, which is now in its 25th volume, has spun off several related compilations.

While he is no longer the resident DJ at the famous San Antonio hotspot Café del Mar, Jose, known for his ambient music, tours all over the world.

Most recently, Padilla returned to BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix decks in mid-August 2015 for the first time in 20 years, with an eclectic two-hour “Masters” set.

Jose Padilla still brings music to the world in his sets worldwide and is musical ambassador for Ibiza,
