West End actor Graham Martin found dead at his home from pneumonia aged 50

West End actor Graham Martin was found dead at his home from pneumonia.

The actor, whose real name was Graham Reid, was found dead during the coronavirus lockdown.

Martin starred in Blood Brothers, the Batman arena show, The Hollow and Sherlock Holmes.

The 50-year-old, from Marton, Middlesbrough, also had roles in Brighton Rock and Starlight Express on the West End.

He was found dead at his home on Clare Street, in Basford, Stoke-on-Trent, on May 1.

Playwright Tim Churchill shared a dressing room with Graham for 11 years during their time on tour with Blood Brothers.

The 49-year-old said he alerted the police after fearing something was wrong.

Tim, from Stone, Staffordshire, told StokeOnTrentLive: “I was going to go to his house even though the lockdown was in place because I had a bad feeling.

“We got delayed because we had to go and pick up some stuff from a pharmacy so I decided to ring the police.

“It was unlike him not to have not been on social media or anywhere online. I called the police and they went around.

“It was such a shock and it knocked the wind out of me. I spent the rest of the day phoning everyone I knew who knew Graham because I didn’t want them finding out on social media.

“The last conversation with him was when I wanted to know whether he fancied doing a read through of a play on Zoom and he said he would download the app and get back to me. He never did.

“Graham was a very talented actor and he had a big heart.

“He was one of the most professional people I’ve ever worked with. His work ethic was excellent and he would bring a sense of fun into the dressing room and still get the work done. He had that balance between getting the job done and having a lot of fun at the same time.”

Graham’s friend David Simpson, who trained alongside him as a young acting hopeful at ArtsEd in London, said he had won a part in the production of Hairspray on The Royal Carribbean cruise ship.
