Kate Garraway heartbreak over mistake with son while husband fights for his life

Kate Garraway has opened up about feeling guilty about a mistake with her son Billy as her husband Derek Draper continues to fight for his life in hospital.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain host appeared on the show on Wednesday ahead of her return to the ITV show next week.

She told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about going back to work while her husband Derek continues to battle the aftermath of coronavirus in hospital.

Kate admitted that she let her son down after she missed an email about his year six leavers hoodie.

She failed to see the email, and then discovered everyone in his class received a hoodie except Billy.

The television presenter explained: “I mucked up this week with the children. Billy is in year six and they’d organised this Leaver’s hoodie and they sent an email and I missed it so everyone got one and he didn’t, and he was really upset.”

Luckily another mum had ordered two of the special jumpers, and so Billy was able to have the spare one.

Kate said despite Billy getting one in the end, the guilt gave her a wake-up call.

She said: “Derek would be incensed with me… and I thought, ‘You’ve got to get on, you’ve got to read your emails.'”

Kate recently revealed that Derek could miss their son Billy starting secondary school this year.

She told Hello! magazine: “Billy starts secondary school in September, but Derek’s doctors say he won’t be out of hospital by then.

“My priority is to make the children feel safe, not to let them see me feeling vulnerable in the world where Derek was my rock.

“So that they don’t see me cry, I lock myself in the bathroom and tell them I’m washing my hair. I run the bath to drown out my sobs.”

Derek recently came out of his coma, however doctors have warned Kate he is still in a ‘critical’ condition.

Kate will be returning to GMB on Monday to host the show with co-star Ben Shephard while Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid take a summer break.
