Heartbroken John Travolta says wife Kelly privately battled cancer for two years

John Travolta has revealed his beloved wife Kelly Preston died after a “courageous fight” against breast cancer.

A spokesman for the family confirmed Kelly, 57, had been undergoing treatment for the disease for almost two years prior to her tragic death.

Speaking to People, they said the actress had decided to “keep her fight private [and] had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends”.

The spokesman went on: “She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched. Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time.”

John, 66, confirmed the news of his wife’s death in a heartbreaking post over social media this afternoon, praising Kelly’s resilience in her final days and months.

He said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.”

The actor went on to thank the staff at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, which has a location in Texas, adding that “Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered”.

John added that he would be focusing on his children for the foreseeable future, offering them support as the family grieves.

He said: “I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while.

“But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal.”

John and Kelly tied the knot in an intimate Parisian ceremony in 1991, having met in four years previously while filming The Experts.

The lovebirds had three children together, though tragically lost their son Jett in 2009 after he suffered from a seizure on a family holiday to the Bahamas.

Both Scientologists, John and Kelly starred alongside one another in a number of films over the years, from Gotti to Old Dogs.

A celebrated actress, Kelly’s life and legacy has been honoured over social media since news of her death broke, with friends and acquaintances praising her warmth and energy in heartfelt tributes.

A memorial service is expected to be held at a later date.
