EastEnders introduces beer garden as Sharon and Ian take on Queen Vic

EastEnders is introducing a beer garden outside the Queen Vic so that they are able to shoot scenes externally.

The BBC cast and crew returned to filming last month, however new episodes won’t air until the autumn.

The coronavirus pandemic will be used as a background element to storylines, which may pub the Queen Vic shut its doors during the first few episodes because of lockdown.

But new aerial shots circulating online show pink parasols and outdoor tables and benches on Albert Square.

This means Queen Vic regulars will be able to enjoy a pint by socially distancing outside in the space just across the street from the pub’s main entrance.

The beer garden is just one addition to the soap’s brand new £87million set.

These also includes a mural as the Square is updated to reflect modern Britain.

British-born Ghanaian artist Dreph has created the piece which has been painted on the brick wall of the Beales’ house on Albert Square.

Sharon Mitchell and Ian Beale were announced as the Queen Vic owners in the final episode before the soap went off-air for the first time in 35 years.

It’s thought both business owners will struggle as they feel the financial impact of lockdown on their businesses.

Ian, who is a restaurateur and takeaway shop owner, may particularly feel the squeeze.

The last time the Queen Vic was shut was in 2010 when it was closed for refurbishment because Phil burnt it down while on cocaine.
