Coronation Street's Tim 'to turn on evil dad Geoff' as actor teases fate

Coronation Street viewers have been gripped by the Geoff Metcalfe abuse storyline for months, and the arrival of a mysterious newcomer has added another twist to the sorry tale.

Actor Ian Bartholomew, who plays the evil Geoff, recently revealed the reappearance of his character’s ex-wife will threaten his relationship with his son.

Elaine Jones, played by Paula Wilcox, has shown face in Weatherfield, confessing to being Tim Metcalfe’s real mother.

Geoff lied to his son his entire life, convincing Tim (Joe Duttine) that his actual mother was Tessa Metcalfe, who died of breast cancer several years ago.

In reality, Elaine abandoned Tim 50 years ago in an effort to flee her abusive marriage, after years of Geoff’s torment left her fearing for her life.

Speaking about Geoff’s relationship with his son, actor Ian told Digital Spy: “He has told himself time and time again that it is the truth and what he has told Tim is true.

“In the back of his mind, he knows it is not true – so when it finally hits and we finally find out that he has been lying to Tim all his life and Tim discovers that his whole life is based on a lie, it will be a real kick in the gut.

“Geoff is facing losing the one person he does not want to lose from his life.”

Could Geoff’s relationship with his son fall apart?

Coronation Street spoilers have revealed that upcoming scenes will see Elaine tell Tim the truth, exposing herself as his birth mother in a shock confession.

While Geoff will try to convince his son that Elaine is unhinged, the truth will eventually catch up with him, and his web of lies will come undone.

Hinting at the heartache ahead, Ian mused: “He has been lying for years to his son and has concocted this whole story about someone else being his mother, and the fact that his real mother suddenly turns up and what is more she has been to see Yasmeen, that is a game-changer for him.

“He feels very threatened and is having to think on his feet. He never imagined [Elaine] would resurface… It absolutely throws him completely. He gets a grip quickly, because he is very manipulative and resourceful in that way.”

The soap star also suggested Geoff could resort to violence in an effort to save his relationship with his son, lashing out at Elaine with his famously volatile temper.

He said: “It is his anger that fuels him to do something about it. How dare this woman come back and ruin his life. He threatens her and we have to believe that he will stop at nothing to get this woman, this problem, out of his life. She is a real problem. She knows the truth, and if other people find out it is game over.”

Will Elaine survive Geoff’s reign of terror?

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
