Barbara Windsor's husband 'can't stop crying' as she's moved into care home

Barbara Windsor’s heartbroken husband Scott Mitchell has admitted he can’t stop crying after she moved into a residential care home.

The EastEnders legend has left her marital home in order to get extra support during her Alzheimer’s battle.

Scott has likened his 82-year-old wife’s new move to a “bereavement”, admitting it’s really hitting him hard.

He said: “I feel like I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst into tears. It feels like a bereavement.”

Scott added to The Sun: “It’s always been my biggest fear, that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking, ‘Why would he do this to me?’

“That fear has become a reality. It’s something I never wanted.”

The distraught chap explained that doctors had advised him to tell Barbara, who played Peggy Mitchell, that she was going away for a couple of days while changes were made to her transition.

They said that they believed that would help make the changes easier for his suffering wife.

Sadly, the soap star’s condition got worse during the coronavirus lockdown and Scott was forced to bring in some extra help to care for her.

He said that Barbara hadn’t been able to understand why nobody was coming to visit her any more due to the lockdown restrictions meaning friends and family had to stay away.

Recently, Scott spoke to Barbara’s former on-screen son Ross Kemp in his documentary Living With Dementia.

He spoke of having to face “dark moments” as he began to accept he needed more help with his wife’s care.

Scott told Ross: “I can’t imagine leaving that lady when she talks to me the way she does and putting her somewhere and thinking, “Why has he done this to me?'”

Dame Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago but went public with the news in 2018.

Since then, both she and her husband have been campaigning to raise awareness and funds for charity.
