Meghan Markle fails to make Vogue's most powerful women list after royal split

Meghan Markle has for the first time since joining the Royal Family not made Vogue’s annual list of their 25 most powerful women.

The Duchess of Sussex, 39, appeared in the esteemed list in both 2018 and 2019 but has this year not made the cut, nor has Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge who also featured in last year’s.

Instead, BBC Three’s Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones has paved the way, alongside Rihanna, make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury and the Queen.

The annual Vogue 25 list selects “the women of the moment who are leading us through 2020 with prescience, power and poise”.

This year’s edition seeks to highlight how, during the coronavirus pandemic, “as priorities shifted so did the spotlight”.

Elsewhere, it’s suggested that the lockdown period has “deepened” the Queen’s relevance after the 94-year-old monarch was nominated.

Daisy, 22, was catapulted to international stardom after appearing alongside Paul Mescal in the hit show which hit screens during the coronavirus lockdown period.

Bosses at the glossy magazine reported that Daisy is “the star of lockdown”.

Daisy became an overnight hit thanks to the show which sees her and Paul play the roles of lustful young lovers who overcome multiple hurdles to find love with one another.

Normal People has been dubbed the Beeb’s raunchiest production to date, with Daisy and Paul often whipping their kit off for a string of passionate romps.

Speaking about his onscreen romps with Daisy, Paul said: “There was an understanding that me and Daisy would fundamentally get on. It can be detrimental to force chemistry onto people.”

“We didn’t spend a huge amount of time together. We spent the guts of two weeks. The production weren’t like, you go off and get to know each other,” he told Backstage Live.

The programme has gone on to amass over 30 million viewers across the globe since it first aired on BBC Three.

Meanwhile, 2019 Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo features on the list, as does Labour MP Dawn Butler.

Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, June Sarpong, the BBC’s first director of creative diversity, and Michaela Coel, the creator of hit series I May Destroy You, also appear.

Transgender model Munroe Bergdorf also received a nomination for her role as an activist.

Munroe, 32, became the first transgender model for L’Oreal in the UK and has since gone on to walk in London and New York Fashion Week.

Also featured are vaccinologist Professor Sarah Gilbert and domestic abuse commissioner Nicole Jacobs.
