Simon Cowell missed injuring spinal cord by 'centimetres' in front of son Eric

Simon Cowell missed breaking his spinal cord by just one centimetre while out with his son.

The music mogul suffered multiple fractures on his back after he fell from a new electric bike while testing it out.

Syco boss Simon, 60, was joined by his son Eric, 6, partner Lauren Silverman, 43, and her son Adam, 14, while out around his Malibu home before the incident.

It’s reported that the trio watched on in horror as the Britain’s Got Talent boss came crashing to the ground as he attempted to impress his other half by doing a wheelie.

A source said: “He could have been looking at life in a wheelchair.”

The insider went on to tell The Sun : “He was testing out his new bike with Eric and Adam and the power of it surprised him a bit.

“He fell back directly onto his back and immediately knew he was in trouble. He was in a bad way.”

Simon is said to have undergone around six hours of surgery to insert a metal rod onto his spine.

The entrepreneur now faces a lengthy stay in hospital, throwing his plans to appear on the live launch of the upcoming series of America’s Got Talent which launches tomorrow in the States.

Sources claim that Simon risked damaging his spinal cord by just one centimetre.

They added: “He fell back directly onto his back and immediately knew he was in trouble. He was in a bad way.

“Had he damaged the spinal cord he could have been looking at life in a wheelchair, but thanks to the doctors he is hopeful of making a full recovery.”

A spokesperson for Cowell confirmed the news, saying: “Simon has broken his back in a number of places in a fall from his bike whilst testing a new electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu with his family.”

Reassuring fans on his condition, the spokesperson went on to say: “He was taken to hospital where they operated overnight. He’s under observation and is doing fine.”
