Supermarket Sweep return confirmed with surprise 'social distancing' makeover

Supermarket Sweep fans will be delighted to learn the retro game show is back – and this year promises to be bigger than ever.

With production already underway, host Rylan Clark-Neal opened up about the changes being implemented to keep the cast and crew safe in the wake of the Covid pandemic.

Everything from the format of the games to the selection of the contestants has been subtly tweaked, as players scramble to make the supermarket jackpot.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, Rylan confirmed the show will be back on our screens in September, adding: “It’s not long, about a three-week turnaround. Wish me luck, I’m doing three shows a day!”

The former X Factor star revealed ITV bosses sat down for a meeting during the lockdown and discussed the best ways to remake the series safely.

He said “That was my big worry. During the planning meetings – and they’re agreed, the channel – I said ‘listen if we can’t make the Supermarket Sweep that everyone loves there’s no point making it. Let’s just wait’.”

Thankfully, the team soon realised with minor changes the central format of the show could be maintained, with a few exciting twists.

He said: “When we looked at social distancing restrictions and guidelines, a trolley is over a metre long.

“Working it out all the way through, all the teams are from the same household. If they’re not from the same household, they’ve been tested and their test has to come back negative before we let them walk into the studio.”

Originally launched in 1993, Rylan took over from TV legend Dale Winton for the show’s spectacular revamp last year, with jazzy trolley dashes and quick-fire quiz questions.

Proving the 2020 series is set to be the best yet, Rylan added: “In fact, we’ve added games which is fantastic.

“It’s so different, because everyone in the studio, all the crew are wearing masks. And all the contestants can’t bring products to me, they have to bring them to their podiums.

“There are all these challenges that we know in real life but actually as a viewer, you’re not really going to know the difference. That’s where I think the crew have done such a great job.”

Aside from working on Supermarket Sweep, Rylan has also teamed with Flora Plant to host a series of lively cooking demonstrations, using the culinary skills he picked up from Celeb Masterchef to whip up recipes.

Describing the series, he joked: “I wouldn’t say I’m Gordon Ramsay, but after Masterchef I learnt a lot in the kitchen.”

Rylan is working with FLORA PLANT , a new rich and creamy, 100% plant-based alternative to dairy butter, to host ‘I PLANT BELIEVE IT’, an online cookery series that anyone and everyone can follow along to and learn how to make delicious plant based meals at home.
