Gwyneth Paltrow 'knew' she couldn't save Chris Martin marriage but ignored signs

Gwyneth Paltrow has recalled the heartbreaking moment when she realised her marriage to Chris Martin was unsavable.

The Avengers: Endgame actress admitted she and the Coldplay musician had ignored the signs they were heading for heartbreak after being married for 13 years.

Both Gwyneth and Chris had been celebrating her 38th birthday during a luxury break to Italy where they were staying in a stunning cottage in Tuscany.

Gwyneth, 47, admitted to “hiding” from the truth until she no longer felt she could.

Despite the former lovers sharing similar interests, they sadly didn’t match with one another.

Penning her most personal moments in the September issue of Vogue, she didn’t remember the time of day or which day of the weekend it was, but she knew the relationship had come to an end.

“I don’t remember which day of the weekend it was or the time of day. But I knew – despite long walks and longer lie-ins, big glasses of Barolo and hands held – my marriage was over.

“What I do remember is that it felt almost involuntary, like the ring of a bell that has sounded and cannot be undone. The inadvertent release of a helium balloon into the sky. I tried to quell that knowing, to push it far down.”

The mum-of-two went on to add: “I tried to convince myself it had been a fleeting thought, that marriage is complicated and ebbed and flowed. But I knew it. It was in my bones.”

Gwyneth and Chris announced their “conscious uncoupling” to their devoted fans following an idea suggested by their therapist.

Their uncoupling was later announced via a newsletter sent out by Gwyneth’s lifestyle blog, Goop.

“Between the day that I knew and the day we finally relented to the truth, we tried everything. We did not want to fail. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We desperately didn’t want to hurt our children. We didn’t want to lose our family,” she said.

While navigating themselves through their split, the Californian-native said there had been “great days and terrible days”.

However, despite divorcing, Gwyneth reassured fans that it is ok to love your ex-partner: “You loved your ex once and you probably still do, so keep those great qualities of theirs close to your heart,

“Which leads me to the final and potentially most radical point: it’s OK to stay in love with the parts of your ex that you were always in love with. In fact, that’s what makes conscious uncoupling work. Love all of those wonderful parts of them.”

She later admitted that she knew Chris was destined to be in her life, saying: “I know my ex-husband was meant to be the father of my children, and I know my current husband is meant to be the person I grow very old with.”

Gwyneth and Chris officially divorced in 2016. She went on to remarry American television writer Bradley Falchuk, while Chris has been romantically linked to actress Dakota Johnson.
