Backyard Envy does what it says on the tin – it gives us major garden envy.
Airing on Hayu in the UK, the American reality TV show follows landscapers, James DeSantis, Garrett Magee, and Melissa Brasier, as they turn people’s yards (getting down with the US lingo) into beautiful paradises.
Back for season two, Daily Star Online caught up with the green-fingered trio across the point to chat all things plants, gardens, and what viewers can expect from the new season.
Just like the first series, the team transform everything from rooftops to backyards in the most spectacular fashion possible – there are no shortcuts here.
“This season, we have a little bit more of a deep dive into our work dramas, personal dramas, and there’s an engagement.
“It shows our relationship with our workers a little bit more,” James explained.
“There’s talk of us opening new offices, and people are leaving, so there’s a lot. There’s a lot happening. The first season was all about the before and after of the transformation, and this season is all about behind-the-curtain of the business and how we run.”
Discussing how if it’s harder to film personal scenes, James added: “It’s harder to watch. When it’s happening in the moment – it feels really natural.”
Melissa touched upon the personal nature of season 2, explaining her battle with cancer is documented on the show.
“The first episode shows me dealing with cancer last year, and it was emotional to watch back. We never really spoke about our personal lives last season. Fans all of a sudden knew my personal business, and I thought ‘oh wow I’m on a reality show’.
“I do think it’s for the best – and I think the show is much more dynamic now. And it definitely more relatable.”
While other industries after suffered in the pandemic, the team admitted they’ve been inundated with work offers.
“We’ve actually been really busy,” Garrett said, “So many people, because they’re at home now, and they have these outdoor spaces they really want to maximise every inch of their real estate.”
“It’s people’s personal gym, where they relax with their family, their office. Outdoor space has become really, really valuable.”
Asked if a UK version could be on the cards in the not-so-distant future, James replied: “We’d love to!”
