Who Wants to be a Millionaire awards teenager as youngest ever winner on show

A teenager made history by being crowned the youngest ever Who Wants to be a Millionaire winner on tonight’s episode.

Ben Jones, 19, is the youngest player to make it to the hot seat, winning £8,000 as Jezza fired question after question in his direction.

On top of that, later in the series, another contestant will win £1million as the first jackpot winner since Charles Ingram won the prize in 2001 and then lost it after being embroiled in a cheating scandal.

The teen from Bridgend, Wales, was teased by host Jeremy Clarkson that his voice and testicles were dropping as the camera rolled.

Ben used the new lifeline available to contestants – asking Jeremy for help – on an alcohol-related question, but the former Top Gear host couldn’t tell him what a Mimosa was.

Thankfully, he was able to use his Phone A Friend lifeline to call his pal David, who gave give him the answer.

On another occasion, Jeremy did save the day for Ben when he struggled with a river-related question.

The game show with the biggest prize in TV history launched in 1998 with Chris Tarrant in the host’s chair and has now run for 630 episodes.

The show was such a hit that TV stations around the world sought to make their own versions – Millionaire has now been aired in more than 90 countries.

The first UK millionaire winner was Judith Keppel in 2000, who remains the only woman to take the jackpot.

Now aged 78, she spent £100 phoning the show more than 50 times to secure a place.

Former physics teacher David Edwards and Oxford-educated banker Robert Brydges both went home with the £1million prize in 2001.

Infamous player Charles Ingram also won a million, but he was later exposed as a cheat – which has been documented in the ITV series “Quiz”.

But the episode was never aired and he was stripped of his prize after being found guilty of cheating in 2003.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire airs at 9pm on ITV tonight.
