Gogglebox fans distracted by replacement in Siddiqui family during series debut

Gogglebox fans were delighted to see the Channel 4 series return this evening, but a change in the Siddiqui family left some viewers distracted.

The family, who first joined the show in season one, returned with dad Sid and his two sons, Baasit and Umar, cracking jokes from their Derby home.

This evening, viewers noticed the family’s lounge looked completely different, with patterned wallpaper and new lamps and accessories.

Eagle-eyed fans also suspected the family had purchased a new sofa during the lockdown, opting for a glamorous shade of pea green.

Prior to season 15, the Siddiquis filmed the show in a room with cream walls and a black leather sofa, curved to fit both father and sons.

Taking to Twitter, viewers weighed in on the transformation, with some even wondering whether the family had moved house.

One said: “Catching up on #Gogglebox and yay! Siddiqui dad is back! With a fancy new sofa.”

A second said: “Habe the Saddiqui family moved house? Or just got a new sofa?”

And a third chimed: “Ooh they’ve got a new sofa. #GOGGLEBOX.”

“Why are the Siddiqui family sitting in a different living room. Its thrown me. Need details,” added a fourth.

Despite the radical change in set-up, viewers were delighted to see sons Baasit and Umar reunited with their dad on the show, after the 73-year-old dropped out of filming during the lockdown.

Channel 4 decided it was too risky for castmembers over the age of 70 to take part in the series, as they fell into the “vulnerable” category during the pandemic.

Back in April, Sid explained his absence from the show in a heartfelt tweet, assuring viewers he would soon return to the production.

He began: “A big hi to all my friends.

“I don’t feel you’re fans but my best and close friends.

“I am sorry for my absence from #Gogglebox, your kind and beautiful messages always overwhelm me with touch of sadness.”

He finished: “These difficult times will pass. Please #bestrong #besafe.”

Welcome back Sid!

Gogglebox airs on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
