Phillip Schofield has been slammed for recommending wine that one customer branded “fizzy Ribena”.
The This Morning presenter has ventured into picking his favourite wine with reds and whites bearing his name on sale at upmarket store Waitrose.
But wine lovers have not taken to his vintage with one saying the boxed Italian red wine was “only fit for the bin”.
Another said it was “no more palatable than fizzy Ribena”.
Schofield is following in the footsteps of other celebrities putting their names to vino including Sir Cliff Richard (who has his own vineyard in Portugal), Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and the Beckhams.
His Phillip Schofield Nero di Troia 2.25L from Puglia, southern Italy, is described as “super fruity with a fragrant nose, and just a little spice”.
But it has already had its price slashed to £19.99 from £24.99.
Another Waitrose customer said: “Having discovered how truly awful it is, it will probably be poured down the sink.”
Schofield, described as “a wine aficionado” on the Waitrose website, launched a pair of “high quality artisan wines” in April with his Italian partners.
The Phillip Schofield Benevento IGT Falanghina white wine comes from the Campania region and is said to be “bursting with zesty lemon and lime flavours, delicate acacia and orange blossom notes and hints of tart green apple and quince on the finish”.
A wine expert said: “It’s all about making lots of little decisions correctly.
“What you don’t want to do is just put your name on something where you haven’t tasted it.”
