Mariah Carey has spoken out about why she had an affair during her first marriage to music producer Tommy Mottola.
The mum-of-two has left no stone unturned in her new memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, which was released on Monday.
The songstress married Tommy back in 1993 when she was just 23 years old and he was 43, but they had separated by 1997.
During the marriage Mariah kept a packed bag under her bed in case she needed to escape from him.
She claims in the book: “It felt like he was cutting off my circulation, keeping me from my friends and what little ‘family’ I had.

“I couldn’t talk to anyone that wasn’t under Tommy’s control. I couldn’t go out or do anything with anybody. I couldn’t move freely in my own house.”
Tommy hasn’t responded publicly to the claims in Mariah’s new book, but has said he wishes “her and her family only the very best”.
Mariah has also admitted she cheated on Tommy with New York Yankees player Derek Jeter.

The Fantasy hitmaker said they bonded over both having biracial parents and snuck around behind her husband’s back.
She called the affair “the catalyst [she] needed to get out from under Tommy’s crippling control”.
Mariah went on to be in a three-year relationship with singer Luis Miguel from 1998 until 2001.

She met actor and comedian Nick Cannon while they shot her music video for her song “Bye Bye” on an island off the coast of Antigua.
In April 2008 they married in The Bahamas and three years later they welcomed their fraternal twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
Sadly, in August 2014 Nick confirmed he and Mariah had separated and he filed for divorce on December 12, 2014.

“Making the necessary adult adjustments to being working parents in entertainment took its toll on our relationship – but Moroccan and Monroe (so named because I wanted them to have the initials MC, like me) are ensconced in the safe and abundant environment that has been created for them,” she writes in her book.
The US singer also details her rehab stint and her Bipolar diagnosis following her breakdown in 2001.

The mum-of-two admits she had she only slept two hours in almost a week before she went to rehab.
“I was working so hard and I wasn’t about to let everything I’d worked so hard for just to slip away. So, I worked myself into the ground,” she writes.
“I was in a very dark place that ended up almost completely destroying my life.”
Following a short-lived engagement to Australian billionaire James Packer, Mariah has been in an on-off relationship with choreographer Bryan Tanaka since October 2016.
