Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan came face to face with his Spitting Image puppet live on the ITV breakfast show on Wednesday.
BritBox has revived the classic satirical puppet series and the outspoken presenter introduced his caricature and the voice behind it, comedian Luke Kempner, to co-star Susanna Reid and ITV viewers today. (September 30).
Ahead of the big reveal, Piers, 55, joked that the puppet was “just disgustingly grotesque, hideously unflattering and deeply personally offensive as you would all hope”.
Unveiling the puppet, an unhappy Piers said: “I have waited all my adult life for a Spitting Image puppet but I would happily wait another 40 years.”
Susanna, 49, teased her pal Piers by saying the puppet was like “looking in the mirror” for her colleague.
She also joked: “Where has his mouth gone?”
As Piers moaned: “There is no resemblance to me… it has an enormous set of chins.”
Viewers rushed to their keyboards to discuss the hilarious puppet version of Piers.
Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “OMG Piers’ puppet is actually a Spitting Image.”
Another added: “Piers Morgan spitting image looks just like him. A pursed pair of lips ready to kiss arse on a fat sweaty entitled face.”
A third posted: “Piers is a puppet.”
While a fourth said: “Can’t wait for Spitting Image to come back, especially with Piers.”
Despite Piers’ moans about the puppet, he did say his ego was boosted by now having his own puppet.
Spitting Image features puppet caricatures of contemporary celebrities and public figures.
One of the most-watched shows of the 1980s and early 1990s, the series features stars from the world of politics, entertainment, sport and British popular culture.
The popularity of the show back in the day saw collaborations with musicians, including Phil Collins and Sting.
The series was cancelled in 1996 after viewing figures declined.
ITV had planned for a new series in 2006, but these were scrapped after a dispute over the Ant and Dec puppets used to host Best Ever Spitting Image, which were created against creator Roger Law’s wishes.
In 2018, Law donated his entire archive – including scripts, puppet moulds, drawings and recordings – to Cambridge University.
Law announced that the show would be returning with a new series a year later.
It was confirmed last month that the show would return on streaming service BritBox on October 3.
All the original 10 series of Spitting Image will become available on Britbox and bosses have also picked the 14 best episodes to go live when the new episode launches on Friday.
Bosses have also persuaded some of the stars of the original shows, which aired in the 80s and 90s, to take part.
Edwina Currie is one of the celebrities who will introduce her own puppet.
The new puppets include Prince Charles and Camilla, Michael Gove and Dominic Raab plus Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Harry Styles, Brad Pitt, Elton John and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
