Kate Garraway hits out at Jacqui Smith as GMB debate turns tense

Kate Garraway was forced to defend herself during a conversation with one Good Morning Britain guest today, as they discussed SNP MP Margaret Ferrier’s recent controversy.

The 60-year-old Scottish politician has been suspended after she took a train from London to Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus.

Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who is due to appear on the 2020 season of Strictly Come Dancing, appeared on the show alongside broadcaster Iain Dale.

The 57-year-old claimed Ferrier’s behaviour had been unacceptable, as she fumed: “The story of Margaret Ferrier is unbelievable in my view.

“I mean, I hope she gets better quickly, but the idea that you could feel ill, take a test, think it was okay to travel all the way to Westminster, have it confirmed as positive and then travel all the way back to Scotland on public transport.

“I mean it’s just inexcusable. That’s why I think it’s right that she should have the Whip removed from her.”

However, things turned tense in the ITV studio when Jacqui made it clear she didn’t agree with Kate over a comment she had made about the recent behaviour of a number of Brit politicians.

Begrudged, Jacqui jibed: “I don’t completely agree with you, Kate, that all politicians haven’t done the right thing.”

Determined to make her point heard, however, Kate was quick to bite back, insisting she had been misquoted.

She said: “I didn’t say all politicians! I said this kind of behaviour feeds into a sense from people that politicians are urging us to do things that they’re not doing.”

As the mood changed in the studio, Kate realised ITV was expected to go to a commercial break, bringing the conversation to a pause.

Letting Jacqui know they would return to the conversation, Kate took a cheeky swipe at the combative nature of the chat.

She said: “Look, we’re going to take a quick break. I know Iain’s got more to say.”

Laughing, Kate added: “Jacqui, I know you’ve got a lot more to say a lot more about it.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV
