Tom Hollander's 'rainy day masturbation' confession strikes chord with Brits

Actor Tom Hollander has been hailed brilliant and hilarious after describing his average day featuring sleeping pills, baked porridge and weather dependent masturbation.

The star, currently appearing in BBC One’s Sunday night adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel Us, described an average 24 hours for the Sunday Times Magazine’s A Life in the Day.

In the long-running feature, he describes using his phone light to illuminate his nighttime wee so he doesn’t miss the target and popping sleeping pills to aid his slumber.

He also tells how he has baked porridge – a healthy recipe he manages to make unhealthy with added oil and salt – for breakfast and several cups of coffee.

There’s a dose of self-deprecation too as the 53-year-old star of cult sitcom Rev and big budget TV drama The Night Manager talks about examining his bald patch and expanding waist line.

But it’s his “hobbies and extracurricular activities” that really seem to have struck a chord with readers.

He writes: “The afternoon is time for hobbies and extracurricular activities. If it’s sunny, I might go for a cycle ride down the canal, if it’s raining I might masturbate and doze, or speculate on the extraordinary injustice of Philip Green’s knighthood, or look at that app that tells you which celebrity you most resemble (Tom Hardy)…”

On Twitter, readers hailed Hollander’s contribution as “a classic of the genre” and “quite brilliant”.

David Nicholls, who created the character, Douglas, played by the actor in Us, said: “This is characteristically witty and self-deprecating and also a little Douglas-esque.”

More than one person admitted having a “crush” on the star after reading the piece.

Here’s how people, including a few famous faces, reacted on Twitter:

Hollander lives alone in Notting Hill, west London.

He stars in Us on BBC One on Sunday nights at 9pm.
