Prince William has praised Shakira’s newfound passion for skateboarding in a video call just hours after revealing the Colombian singer is on his judging panel for the Earthshot Prize.
The Duke of Cambridge, 38, recently announced a selection of high-profile celebrities as his panel for the new award, which is inspired by his passion and commitment towards combating climate change and repairing our planet.
In a virtual meeting Shakira shared to her Instagram, William mentioned that he was impressed after watching a clip of the Hips Don’t Lie star skateboarding in a car park
He says: “One of the team showed me a video… You’re doing a lot of skateboarding, is that right?”

The 43-year-old songstress looks surprised and replies: “I can’t believe you’ve seen that!”
The Duke grins from ear to ear and adds: “I’ve seen it!”
Shakira then explains that she was trying to get her children to skate but she got hooked on it.
She says: “This year – I don’t know what happened to me – I tried to get my kids to skate. I took them to one of those skating stores, and they’re not really that into it.

“But, I got into it! And now I can’t get off the board. I love it. I love it so much. And, I’m getting into surfing as well.”
“That’s what life’s about, isn’t it?” William replies. “Learning new things as you go along.”
Shakira continues: “Learning new things, no matter the age and no matter when, you know?
“I think it’s so important to discover new hobbies. It just injects a lot of joy into your life.”

The songwriter is one of 13 panellists in the council for the Earthshot Prize, including professional footballer Dani Alves and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and environmentalist Yao Ming, as well as environmental activists including Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim and Christiana Figueres.
The award is designed to provide 50 environmental pioneers with the funds needed to further their work in tackling major problems impacting the environment.
