Robert Redford suffering 'immeasurable' grief after death of his son James at 58

Hollywood legend Robert Redford is mourning the death of his son James who has died aged 58 after battling liver cancer.

The Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid actor, 84, is said to be suffering ‘immeasurable’ grief following the death of his filmmaker son on Friday.

James suffered with health issues since his early childhood and found out he had liver cancer in November last year when he was waiting for a liver transplant.

Robert’s publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement: “The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child. Jamie was a loving son, husband and father.

“His legacy lives on through his children, art, filmmaking and devoted passion to conservation and the environment.”

The statement continued: “Robert Redford is mourning with his family during this difficult time and asks for privacy.”

James’ wife of 32 years, Kyle, announced his death with a Twitter post alongside a picture of the couple and their two kids.

She wrote: “Jamie died today. We’re heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many.

“He will be deeply missed.”

“As his wife of 32 years, I’m most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together.

“I don’t know what we would’ve done without them over the past 2yrs.”

Kyle also told the Salt Lake Tribune James, whose documentary films included The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, discovered the cancer diagnosis in November last year while awaiting a liver transplant.

She added his liver disease returned two years ago.

He had to have two liver transplants before he reached his twenties.

The movie maker made a name for himself mostly in documentaries which focused on health and the environment.

Redford has three other children, including the actress Amy Redford.

Celebrities including Mark Ruffalo and Kiefer Sutherland also paid tribute to James.

James’ two children with Kyle – 29-year-old actor son Dylan and actress Lena – were featured in the snaps she shared on Twitter.

The filmmaker received two liver transplants in 1993 and founded the James Redford Institute For Transplant Awareness in 1995 after being inspired by his experience.

The charity has produced films aimed at educating people about transplants.

In 1999 he produced a documentary which examined the impact that transplants have on donors, recipients, and their families.
