Eamonn Holmes fury as he asks musician, 10, if she'll get 'real job' when older

Eamonn Holmes came under fire with This Morning fans on Wednesday’s show, when he asked a young drummer whether she would get a “real job” when she’s older.

Nandi Bushell, 10, appeared on the show with her proud dad, having drummed for major musicians such as Lenny Kravitz and Dua Lipa in the past.

Ruth Langsford was hugely impressed by her talent, as the schoolgirl drummed her own version of a Coldplay song for the cameras.

However, This Morning fans weren’t impressed when Eamonn asked the young prodigy about her job prospects when she grows up.

When Nandi said she continues to study hard at school, Eamonn asked: “Oh yes, that does sound so much more attractive than drums!

“But do tell me what you want to be – whether it’s a drummer or a real job or whatever, what do you want to be when you grow up?”

Sticking to music, Nandi explained she would like to join a band, touring the world and performing as a drummer.

Over on Twitter, viewers fumed at the remark, feeling it reflected negatively on the creative industries in the UK and undermined Nandi’s talent.

One said: “Cringed a bit at Eamonn Holmes basically telling wee Nandi Bushell the 10 year old drumming prodigy to stick in at Maths and English so she can get a ‘real job’. Musicians have a real job, as much as tv presenters do.”

“Just watched Eamonn & Ruth interview an incredible 10year old drummer called Nandi. Eamonn asked when she grows up does she want to be a drummer or get a real job? Wrong choice of words Eamonn!!” wrote a second.

And a third penned: “Eamon been getting advice from Rishi Sunak this morning about what a proper job is, well done.”

“Eamon, How is being a drummer not a ‘real job’ what is a real job?, if she’s gunna be earning money and enjoying what she does why can’t she drum for her career, you can make a success in life doing anything why put her down,” agreed a fourth.

Some viewers compared Eamonn’s remark to recent comments made by chancellor Rishi Sunak, which were met by a backlash from creatives up and down the country.

The politician suggested those struggling for work ought to retrain in the future, with some feeling the remark was directed at musicians and those in the arts.

He said: “I can’t pretend that everyone can do exactly the same job that they were doing at the beginning of this crisis.

“That’s why we’ve put a lot of resource into trying to create new opportunities.”

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
