Phillip Schofield awkwardly rejects Reverend Richard Coles' date invitation

Reverend Richard Coles has been rejected by Phillip Schofield after he asked the This Morning presenter to go on a date with him.

The 58-year-old popped the question to Phillip, also 58, during an awkward live interview which saw him ask the star to join him for dinner and drinks.

Appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Morning Live over the weekend, the vicar revealed that sadly Phillip had rejected his request.

The vicar made the confession after a fan asked for an update on whether Phillip had responded to his sweet gesture to go on a date.

“So did you get a date with Phillip?” the fan asked, to which Richard responded: “Not so much.”

On Saturday, he made the proposal when he interviewed Phillip, who was promoting his new book Life’s What You Make It, on the radio show.

Offering himself up on a plate, the cheeky vicar took a second to offer Phillip a date.

He said to Phillip: “If you’re looking for a bit of company Phillip?”

The vicar continued: “Broadcaster, gay, in his middle years. Drink, dinner?”

Phil responded: “Are you asking me out?”

Richard’s co-host Shaun Keaveny jumped in and said: “I feel like a bit of a gooseberry now.”

It comes after Phillip bravely came out as gay last year on his Instagram account and then immediately appeared on This Morning with pal Holly Willoughby to share his story.

Vicar Richard has been single since the death of his beloved husband David in 2019.

Phil is still married to his wife Stephanie Lowe, with whom he shares daughters Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24.

Announcing his sexuality at the time, he said: “With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.”
