Adele SNL sketch branded 'tone-deaf' by fans during hosting debut

Adele’s Saturday Night Live episode went down a treat with many viewers, but some were left unimpressed with one of the songstress’ sketches, which poked fun at sex tourism in Africa.

The Someone Like You singer, 32, guest-hosted the American show’s latest episode and received wide praise for her comedic skills and acting abilities.

However, she also came under fire for a sketch that starred herself and actress Kate McKinnon, where they portrayed women advertising holidays in Africa for their tourism board.

The segment seemed to poke fun at rich white westerners who travel to Africa for sex, with both Adele and Kate making multiple X-rated jokes.

Adele appeared in the SNL skit

Both women encouraged others to come to the continent, not only for its beautiful scenery and weather, but for the “massive bamboo” too.

Dressed in a blue traditional-style kaftan dress and wearing a voluminous blonde wig, Adele walks toward the camera alongside Kate saying: “Sun, breeze, oceans, mountains, in beautiful Africa.”

As Kate continues: “Witness the wonder, the escape, the story,” a topless black man could be seen walking behind them arm-in-arm with a white woman.

Adele continues: “The sandy beaches. The massive bamboo.”

The actresses were slated for the ‘offensive’ sketch

Kate then chimes in: “The tribesmen,” which kicks off Adele’s giggle fit.

The pair are then joined by a third lady in the sketch, actress Heidi Gardner, who explains she traveled to the continent after divorcing her husband.

Adele tells the camera “I found a deep, deep connection,” to which Heidi replies: “You can feel it in your stomach.”

This sketch didn’t go down well with a lot of viewers, who took to social media to react to the segment and share their opinions.

One wrote: “Tone deaf SNL! Can we please stop fetishising black men and women?!”

Another said: “This was NOT it. Downright offensive”, with another adding: “Don’t like this narrative of fetishisation.”

The Sun reported that another viewer said: “I was actually enjoying it until the comments and the black men carrying white women around..

“Actually felt a bit sick and couldn’t enjoy the rest and I adore Adele but I wish she hadn’t taken part in this skit.”

Meanwhile, another added: “Adele looks great for sure but the Africa skit was in poor taste tbh!”

However, plenty of other viewers loved the sketch, calling it the “best skit,” while another said: “This was absolutely hilarious. Loved it.”
