Sam Smith says they want to be 'mummy' but search for boyfriend is 'exhausting'

Sam Smith has said they want to be a “mummy” to their future children but is single and the moment, labelling the search for a boyfriend “exhausting”.

The singer, who identifies as gender non-binary, is single after their relationship with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn ended two years ago and a romance with furniture designer Francois Rossi this summer went nowhere.

The 28-year-old said they “want all of it” when it comes to family life, but isn’t rushing into anything just yet.

Sam said: “I want kids. I want all of it. I want to be with the kids, watch them grow and be with them every day. I want to be mummy.”

They added: “I’m definitely going to do that at some point, but I’ve still got more in me.

“I’m ambitious and I would still want to sing to people and do this job. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Sam would like to find a partner before taking the step into becoming a parent, but finds the whole process “exhausting”.

Speaking to Zane Lowe in his Apple Music show, Sam said: “I’m going to work my a** off, hopefully find a boyfriend but they’re absolutely nowhere to be found in London.

“I’ve been searching all over the place. Honestly, I’ve been on the front line now for a good three years. It’s exhausting.”

Sam opened up about their gender identity last year, and uses the pronouns they and them.

They said: “My family, they all got it like that and it wasn’t a problem. What I’ve learned is people don’t like to be wrong, and when people mess up a pronoun or something, they really don’t like it.

“It kind of ruins conversations, ruins moments. It’s really difficult.

“So, I’ve had to just go into myself and try and deal with it in a real kind way and just know everyone’s working on this. It’s going to take time. We’re changing a language here.”

But Sam is “unafraid of failure”, saying: “I just feel like I don’t feel a lot of fear at the moment, because I just feel like I could do everything wrong and it would still be OK because I’ve got my own back.

“I really have my own back, and that’s a lovely feeling to feel.”
