Cliff Richard almost hired psychic as he was so desperate to contact dead dad

Sir Cliff Richard was so desperate to talk to his dead dad that he considered hiring a medium.

But he was persuaded not to by bass player Brian “Licorice” Locking, who told him it would offend God.

Sir Cliff, 80, was 21 when his father Rodger Webb died after battling lung disease.

He wrote in his autobiography The Dreamer: “Every day, I missed dad so much. While in Australia, I had seen an advert for a medium.

“I mentioned that I was thinking of finding a medium to try to talk to dad.

“Licorice was horrified. ‘That’s a terrible idea!’ he told me. ‘Do you realise how dangerous it is? It is expressly forbidden in the Bible!’”

Brian read him a passage stating anyone who consults a medium is “detestable”.

Hearing he had almost invoked God’s wrath led Cliff to become a Christian after the incident in the 60s when he was with The Shadows.

The singer added he “still dreams” about his dad and that afterwards he is “happy and pleased to have seen him again”.

Cliff’s dad Rodger was a manager for a catering contractor that worked with Indian Railways.

When Cliff was born, the family lived in British India in Maqbara, which was close to the main shopping area of Hazratganj.

In 1948, after India became independent, the family moved to the UK, arriving in Essex on the back of a three-week sea voyage.

It wasn’t until Rodger bought Cliff, born Harry Rodger Webb, a guitar when he was 16 that his interest in music was kickstarted.
