Phillip Schofield told wife's parents he was gay while making Christmas dinner

This Morning star Phillip Schofield recalled the stomach-churning moment he told his wife’s parents that he was gay.

The 58-year-old explained that he was preparing Christmas dinner at the time, when his mother-in-law Jill paid him a compliment that he simply couldn’t accept.

Unprepared for her comment, that he was the “perfect man”, Phil decided to come clean about his sexuality, confessing all to his wife Stephanie Lowe’s parents.

Back in February, the ITV host publicly came out in a tell-all interview on his day time show, alongside his loyal co-star and friend Holly Willoughby.

During the chat, the TV icon spoke about his love for his family. He has been married to his wife Steph for 27 years, with the couple sharing daughters Molly, 27 and Ruby, 24.

Speaking on the Chris Evans podcast How To Wow, Phil took a look back at the nerve-racking situation, explaining that he was busy cleaning before he decided to open up.

He explained: “Just before Christmas, well during Christmas, I was cleaning – I clean, when I’m stressed, I tidy up – so I was cleaning a surface at Christmas, wiping it down and Jill, my wonderful mother-in-law, said, ‘You are the perfect man, you know’.

“And I just said, ‘No Jill, no I’m not’, but it was the sweetest thing to say. So yeah, big support from them.”

Following their conversation, John, his wife’s father decided to get in touch to let Phil know there was no hard feelings.

Reading the text from John, he said: “I may be your pa-in-law but think of me as your surrogate pa, and long may it continue.

“As long as Steph’s OK we don’t have a problem.”

At which point Chris chimed in to provide Phil’s response: “Then you text him back, ‘Thank you so much, Captain, I’m so very deeply sorry to disappoint you.'”

Showing that there was no animosity and providing support, John replied: “Nothing to be sorry for here son so cheer up!”

Phil beamed: “I couldn’t have wanted anything else really.”

The Dancing On Ice host also recently moved out of the £2million family home in Oxfordshire, setting up home in a pricy bachelor pad, closely situated to the ITV studios.

A source told the Daily Mail: “There has been talk for weeks that Phillip isn’t living with Steph any more, that he had moved out for good and had a new home.

“He has a place in central London. It’s not as big but it’s the beginning of a new life for him.

“It very much also seems as though their marriage could well be over.”
