I'm A Celeb first look sees Beverley Callard and Vernon Kay pelted with maggots

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! is famous for its stomach-churning trials and it looks as though five unlucky stars were thrown into the deep end of the competition on their very first day.

Ahead of the show’s debut on Sunday night, ITV has released a sneak peek at the action from the first day in camp – and the grisly challenge in store for the contestants.

Titled the “Gates of Hell,” the debut challenge of the series saw each of the 10 contestants line up in a row, fearing the worst.

Coronation Street star Beverly, 61, BBC Radio 1 presenter Jordan, 30, Olympian Mo, 37, and former Family Fortunes presenter Vernon, 46, appeared to have been nominated for the first trial, reluctantly receiving directions from Ant and Dec.

Other photos show javelin thrower Paralympian Hollie Arnold braving the tank, trying to banish her nerves as she faced the challenge ahead.

With bucket-loads of bugs falling in slow motion, the pics show the contestants trapped in glass boxes with an opening at the top, which was plied full of maggots.

As they stood in the container in an effort to win stars for the camp, the bugs were splattered all over their heads, slipping down their necks and covering their faces as they wriggled in discomfort.

Beverley looked particularly put off by the challenge, as she threw her hands over her head to prevent more maggots from falling.

The Corrie star, who has played Liz McDonald on the soap since the late 80s, previously admitted she was nervous about the challenges, citing insects as one of her biggest fears.

Vernon’s face was fixed in a grimace of horror, as he focused on the stars, desperate to get out of the tank as soon as possible.

The dad-of-two, who is married to Strictly presenter Tess Daly, had been warned about the toe-curling challenges by his celebrity mates before he appeared on the show.

Vernon previously said: “I saw Dermot O’Leary and Rochelle Humes the other day and they said ‘it’s horrific’ but I told them it was only a telly show!”

Elsewhere in the trial photos, Jordan’s mouth also hung open in disgust as he wriggled from side to side to try and shake the bugs off.

Olympic champion Mo seemed the least fazed by the challenge, as he directed his attention to the task at hand – promising to be a valuable asset to the team.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! debuts tonight at 9pm on ITV.
