The wait is finally over – The Crown Season 4 is finally here to save us from lockdown boredom.
This season will cover the time period from 1977 until 1990, which includes the death of Lord Mountbatten.
Louis Mountbatten was the son of Prince Louis of Battenberg, and great grandson of Queen Victoria I.
He served in World War I, World War II, and successfully led a campaign against Japan that led to the recapture of Burma.
He was also Philip Mountbatten’s uncle, and introduced him to the future Queen Elizabeth.
Over the first three seasons of the historical drama, Lord Mountbatten has been portrayed as an uncle meddling in Prince Philip’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth.

He’s also portrayed as a sympathetic confidant to Prince Charles, and a military man who helped plot a coup to overthrow Harold Wilson’s government.
In season four, Lord Mountbatten is killed at the age of 79, and the royals attend his funeral.

On August 27 1979, Lord Mountbatten was killed when Irish Republican Army (IRA) terrorists detonated a 50-pound bomb hidden on his fishing vessel Shadow V.

The war hero and second cousin of Queen Elizabeth II was spending the day with his family in Donegal Bay, off Ireland’s Northwest coast, when the bomb exploded.
Three others were killed in the attack – including his 14-year-old grandson Nicholas.
Mountbatten was pulled alive from the boat, but later died of his injuries.
Lord Mountbatten’s assassination was the first blow against the Royal family but the IRA during its long campaign to throw the British out of Northern Ireland, and reunite with the Republic of Ireland.

The IRA immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, as well as a bomb in County Down the same day which claimed 18 lives.
They released a statement, saying: “This operation is one of the discriminate ways we can bring to the attention of the English people the continuing occupation of our country.
“The death of Mountbatten and the tributes paid to him will be seen in sharp contrast to the apathy of the British Government and the English people to the deaths of over three hundred British soldiers, and the deaths of Irish men, women, and children at the hands of their forces.”
