Kate Garraway praised by 'devastated' Charlotte Hawkins amid Derek Covid battle

Kate Garraway has been praised by Charlotte Hawkins for “keeping everything together” while Derek Draper remains in hospital.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain host’s husband Derek is in hospital recovering after he contracted a serious strain of Covid-19.

Kate said she felt “physically sick” at the thought of spending Christmas without her husband.

Charlotte told Bella Magazine that her heart goes out to Kate, as she’s “devastated for her”.

She also said Kate is “inspiring” as she has carried on with things during such a crisis.

Charlotte told the publication: “My heart goes out to Kate. We’re devastated for her. I see her work and how she carries on and talks about it on a daily basis is so inspiring.

“She’s been incredible, the way she’s kept everything together for the sake of the family. We’re keeping everything crossed for her and send so much love to them.”

Derek has been hospitalised since March after he contracted coronavirus, and he was put into an induced coma.

There have been improvements to his health, but Kate said he has a long road ahead of him.

Last month, Kate revealed she was in “total panic” about government guidelines as she wouldn’t be able to visit Derek over Christmas.

She said on GMB: “I feel physically sick actually and can feel my chest tightening at the thought of it.

“I’m in total panic about the idea of me, Darcey and Billy on our own this Christmas unable to visit Derek because of potential restrictions.

“That huge emotional hole, and I don’t know how to fill it, without grandparents and without friends helping to fill it.

“It feels like such a significant moment as all festivals are. I do feel in a panic about it, but we’re in this situation because of the spread of a disease that at the moment doesn’t have a cure.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
