This Morning fans horrified as mum splurges £10,000 on kids for Christmas

A mum created a stir among This Morning fans when she explained her plans to spend £10,000 on Christmas gifts for her two children on the ITV show.

Raj Gill, from Glasgow, said she fully intended to “spoil” her teenage kids when she was interviewed by presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

The parent appeared alongside mum Constance Smith from Wigan, who instead argued for spending quality time with kids and only giving them second-hand gifts.

Raj said she’d have no regrets having a splurge before Christmas, saying “I’m going to have a massive blowout.

“I’m going to spend, spend, spend.

“They completely deserve it, they’re really, really good children.

“They rarely ever ask for things.”

Raj said she had an eye on an £8,000 car for her 17-year-old daughter and was planning to spend money on a gaming console and gadgets for her 15-year-old son.

The mum then says it was the coronavirus pandemic that prompted her to splash the cash.

In the clip, she tells the hosts: “It’s been a really tough year.

“We’re BAME, so we’re more susceptible to Covid and they’ve handled it beautifully considering what they’ve been through.”

The mum sparked a fierce debate on Twitter, with some people saying Christmas was not about buying expensive gifts.

One person tweeted: “When I was 14/15 my mum bought me a Hello Kitty colouring book for Christmas and I was absolutely thrilled, because rather than spend a ton on something I might not like, she picked something she knew.

“You don’t need expensive things. Thought that counts. #ThisMorning.”

A second person commented: “This mum spoiling her kids at Christmas saying they never ask for anything… hmmm maybe because they don’t need to as the mum is the one with issue lol #ThisMorning.”

But at least one viewer was sympathetic and said families were saving money during the coronavirus pandemic because there was so little to spend it on.

They tweeted: “No family holiday, no days out and no meals out.

“£10k isn’t that excessive when you think what has been saved. If you can, then why not!”
