Eamonn Holmes reportedly told friends he was “sick of office politics” at This Morning and the situation had been “fraught” for some time ahead of he and wife Ruth Langsford ‘s axe.
It was the programme veterans last ever Friday show yesterday, as the show’s roving reporter Alison Hammond, 45, and X Factor host Dermot O’Leary, 47, will be taking over the presenting gig.
During yesterday’s programme, the pair, who will be returning to host during the half-term breaks, were clearly emotional as they were inundated with well wishes from fans and fellow celebrities alike.
The duo also courted praise after they begged This Morning fans to welcome new hosts Alison and Dermot with open arms.
But despite their kind and professional display, cracks appeared to show at one point on the programme when Eamonn, 61, appeared to hit out at This Morning bosses.
Ruth, 60, and Eamonn were talking about when he came out of the opticians and saw that lots of Christmas trees were discounted.
Ruth told Eamonn: “Well I expect they’re struggling to get rid of them.”
To which Eamonn replied: “Which is why they’re getting rid of us on a Friday now after all this sort of chat.”
Ruth laughed off Eamonn’s cutting jibe and told him to “stop it”.
Friends of Eamonn have since claimed to The Sun that the Irish TV host is “gutted” about the decision.
They alleged to the publication: “Eamonn understands things change in broadcasting — he’s an old hand at this now.

“But the situation at This Morning has felt fraught for a while and the office politics surrounding their future has been bubbling away under the surface.
“He was gutted to be moved from the Friday slot with Ruth. There was no malice with his comment on air, it was more just an expression of sadness.”
Daily Star Online has contacted Eamonn’s spokeswoman for comment.
Regular This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby, 39, and Phillip Schofield, 58, failed to acknowledge Eamonn and Ruth’s departure on social media, however Alison and Dermot both posted sweet messages.
Taking to Twitter, Alison said: “A class above the rest @EamonnHolmes @RuthieeL,” followed by a red love heart emoji.
