Gogglebox's Pete and Lynne 'settled their foster child's drug debt'

Gogglebox duo Pete and Lynne McGarry have been credited with saving a prisoner’s life after settling his debt.

The kindhearted Essex duo decided to step in after their son George Gilbey, 35, called them from behind bars while serving time for a drink-driving.

Pete and Lynne, who have fostered over 70 children throughout the years, felt compelled to help after George told them of his fellow inmate’s troubles.

Speaking frankly about the situation former Celebrity Big Brother star George, said: :His jaw was hanging off his face over a £20 drugs-debt which he’d managed to get saddled with.

“I had to get involved. I called mum and said ‘can you put twenty quid’ in his account’.

“It sorted things out – but the next day he went and bought loads more. Drugs were everywhere in the prison.”

Opening up in new podcast A Bit Of A Stretch, George went on to explain how despite facing time inside for drink driving, he downed booze the day he was due to be sentenced.

George said: “I knew I was going down.

“I’d been told that if I turned up drunk to prison I’d end up on a drugs and alcohol rehab wing with my mates.

“So during a break in my court case I went across the road and drank two bottles of wine and a double vodka.”

Even during his time in prison, George said he was able to access all kinds of illegal substances.

“I could get anything within an hour – from class A’s to Class D’s,” he said reflecting on time inside the Essex prison.

“I’d have been on them every day if I’d been sentenced to a ten-year stretch.”

Determined to turn his life around, George has even told his four-year-old daughter abut his mistakes.

He explained: “She cuddled me and said: ‘Alright daddy I don’t mind you going to work – but don’t do it again’.

“I was a stupid boy but I don’t plan to go back inside.”
