Casualty fans terrified as characters struck down by Covid in 'realistic' twist

Casualty viewers voiced that they were left “creeped out” by the “realistic and eerie” start to the show’s Covid-19 episodes.

Following a long break amid the global coronavirus pandemic, the BBC One medical soap, which runs every Saturday, has finally returned – and tonight’s was the first showing.

Fans rushed to Twitter to share their views immediately as many dubbed the episode as “realistic” and “eerie”.

One tweeted: “Watching Casualty cover the pandemic and who we all were in March is in equal parts eerie and saddening. It’s all so grim.”

A second wrote: “F*** this is powerful #Casualty,” followed by the shocked emoji.

Another commented: “I’m so glad #Casualty is showing the reality of the situation, it’s so easy to detach yourself from what’s going on in hospitals (both at the start of lockdown and now) but it’s really giving me chills seeing it like this.”

“#Casualty is absolutely breaking my heart,” wrote another.

The show began with the cast running around as the news broke of the start of the pandemic and patients began panicking.

Within minutes the first Covid-19 patient had tested positive at the hospital and it was down to Connie Beauchamp to deliver a cracking but “eerie” speech to keep the staff moving.

It was the first episode of the coronavirus on Casualty

Connie told all of the doctors during an emotional speech: “Sorry to interrupt, guys. Can I have a moment, please?”

She then told the staff: “No doubt you’ve heard the rumours, and I’ll confirm now we have our first Covid case.

“The patient is relatively stable and has been admitted for observation.”

Connie took a long deep sigh, and continued: “You know what, guys. I’m going to be honest. We do not know what we are facing here.”

She went on: “But we do know it’s going to be a once in a lifetime event and a lot is going to be asked of us.

“Some of us may get sick, but there are protocols and systems in place for the patients and most importantly for you.

“We are the frontline in the battle against coronavirus and I have faith in every single one of you.”

“Okay?” She said as she looked around the room and the staff members nodded.

She continued: “We can do this! Thank you.”

The eerie show also showed scenes of hundreds of body bags turning up ready for an expected rise in deaths.

It also showed members of staff with asthma panicking, patients releasing they can’t go home because they can’t isolate around vulnerable fellow household members, and Covid-19 positive tests flying in.

Chilling scenes also showed a young man collapse with Covid on his way to the bathroom.
