Jeremy Clarkson says he fought Covid-19 over Christmas and feared he'd 'die'

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed that he fought coronavirus over the Christmas period and recalled how he was scared he would “die on my own”.

The 60-year-old former Top Gear presenter recalled the ordeal in his latest column for The Times.

He told how he began feeling unwell just four days before Christmas Day and then Googled his symptoms before getting a test and testing positive for the deadly virus.

In his column, he wrote: “The doctor was very clear that I’d feel under the weather for between five and 14 days and then I’d either get better or I’d have to go to hospital.”

He continued: “Where, because I am 60 and fat, and because I’ve smoked half a million cigarettes and had double pneumonia, I’d probably die, on my own, in a lonely plastic tent.”

Jeremy said he would wake up drenched in sweat and suffered from a persistent dry cough.

The star said he isolated himself over Christmas due to testing positive.

Speaking on whether he was scared, he said: “I’m not going to lie – it was quite scary!”

He continued: “With every illness I’ve had, there has always been a sense that medicine and time would eventually ride to the rescue.

“But with COVID-19 you have to lie there, on your own, knowing that medicine is not on its way and that time is your worst enemy.”

Jeremy told how on the 25th his kids, Emily, Katya and Finlo, visited him for 40 minutes in the garden while distanced.

He also said he has “absolutely no idea” if he is even “better now”.

It comes after the star said he has decided to change his career paths and wants to open up his own cafe, which will add to his Diddly Squat farm shop.

Initial documents seeking approval for the change of use have been filed with West Oxfordshire District Council.

Strict rules governing what he can sell at his enterprise have already been laid down by the council.

And he hopes to flog local ales alongside hot meals and butties for customers.
