Jesy Nelson's 'parting gift' as Little Mix secure number one with Sweet Melody

Jesy Nelson has landed herself a well-earned parting gift as Little Mix secured the top spot with the hit track Sweet Melody.

It comes after the 29-year-old songstress, released an emotional statement to say that she was leaving the girlband after admitting being in the limelight had “taken a toll” on her mental health.

Sweet Melody which had originally been released back in October– when Jesy was still very much part of the band – finally came up trumps to take the top spot on Friday.

Former bandmates, Jade Thirlwall, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards, who will continue as a trio were on hand to voice their support and glee.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1 to host Scott Mills about securing a chart topper, Jade said: “It’s so special for us because it is the last single we did as a four with Jesy and even more special that now going into 2021 as a three we have got the first number one.”

Leigh-Ann explained: “There was one point where there were like six different versions of Sweet Melody in the top 10 on iTunes.

“They are just so dedicated and amazing, our fans.”

Before Perrie chimed in: “Sometimes the best hits take time.”

Their final number one with Jesy is taken from the girls’ recent album Confetti, which also fared well in the charts.

Sweet Melody will now become the fifth number one single for the girls and their first since 2016’s Shout Out To My Ex.

Little Mix fended off some stiff competition, beating Ed Sheeran in the race with his surprise release of Afterglow, along with rapper CJ who took the third spot with Whoopty.

Prior to Jesy’s shock announcement, speculation swirled after the X Factor singer had skipped some key functions alongside her peers, including the MTV EMAs and the live final of their talent show, The Search.

After the rumour mill had been sent into overdrive, Jesy took to Instagram to make her intentions known.

Her statement read: “The past nine years in Little Mix has been the most incredible time of my life.

“The truth is recently being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health.

“I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.”

She later took to social media to break her silence, telling fans: “I just want to say thank you so much to everyone of you that has shown me so much love and support over the past few days some of your messages have made me feel so emotional and I appreciate it so much.

“Love you all.”
